I've got the Savage 93R17-BVTSS Varmint version with a bull-barrel mounted on a bipod and equipped with a Bushnell Banner 4-12 scope. Loving to hunt chucks and living in Chester County (rimfire only rifle area) I wanted to be able to do it right. My furthest 1-shot kill was at 201 yards ... that was a head shot.

My experience is that the .17 grain Vmax will do the job, but if you want to drop them on the spot, you better hit them in the head. Quite the challenge, hence the bi-pod. Seems like body shots don't/can't anchor them. I've tried the 20-gr. loads but have not found the level of accuracy I'd like. The 17-gr Hornady V-max loads will shoot dime groups all day at 100 yards.

Never shot a fox or a squirrel with it, only chucks and crows ... have no reason to think it wouldn't be the gun for them also.
